Football Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'offside' rule?

A player is in an offside position if he is in the opposition half, and there are not at least two opposition players equal or nearer the opposition's goal line.

It is not an offense to be in an offside position if you are not 'interfering with play'. It is not an offense to be offside if a player receives the ball directly from a goal kick, corner kick or throw-in.

At the moment the ball is played, if the referee decides that a team-mate is in an offside position and interfering with play then he will award the opposition team an indirect free kick to be taken from the spot the offense occurred.
