Ryder Cup
History
The Ryder Cup is held every two years, with the best players from the United States competing against the best players from Europe. When originally started in 1927, the competition was between the USA and Great Britain, but it became obvious that Great Britain could not compete against the US on their own, so in 1953 they were joined by Ireland. However, this still did not balance up the sides, and so in 1979 it became the USA against Europe.
The cup is named after Englishman Samuel Ryder, who was instrumental in setting up the competition, and provided the original trophy.
