Rugby Frequently Asked Questions
Try
A try is worth five points. A player scores a try if they touch the ball down inside the opposition's in-goal area, between the try line and the dead ball line.
Conversion
After a team has scored a try, they then have the chance to have a kick at goal. A successful conversion kick is worth a further two points. The kick is taken from a point in line with where the try was scored, and as near or as far from the goal line as the kicker chooses. The kick is successful if the ball goes between the goal posts and over the cross bar.
Penalty kick
The referee will award a penalty kick if the opposition team commit an offence. The kick must be taken from the point at which the offence occurred. The team awarded the penalty can kick for goal, or drop kick the ball into touch. A successful kick for goal is worth three points.
Drop goal
A player can score a drop goal by successfully kicking the ball between the opposition's goal posts and over the cross bar. The ball is dropped and kicked after bouncing on the ground. A drop goal is worth three points.
